White House reverses experts on Yellowstone policy - Once again, the scientists are overruled. Why bother even having any experts on anything, since the administration always knows best anyway? Just tell all the scientists to take a 6 month vacation until after Inauguration Day. </soapbox>Labels: politics, science, Yellowstone

Truth-o-meter - Wouldn't it be great if, for one Presidential election, there was somebody who could help sort out the truths from the lies, the distortions from the facts? If you think that would be a really great service, you've got to check out PolitiFact.com's Truth-o-meter!Every day, reporters and researchers from the Congressional Quarterly and the St. Petersburg Times will analyze the candidates' speeches, TV ads and interviews and determine whether the claims are accurate.Labels: politics

Quote du jour -What is objectionable, what is dangerous, about extremists is not that they are extreme, but that they are intolerant. The evil is not what they say about their cause, but what they say about their opponents.--Robert F. Kennedy

I've always said... - One thing I have no tolerance for is intolerance. That's one reason I'm a long-time supporter of the Southern Poverty Law Center, whose mission is to track and expose hate groups, wherever they hide in our country. They've now developed a web site called Stand Strong Against Hate, where in addition to plotting the locations of known hate groups, they'll also plot "people of goodwill" who are willing to "stand up and be counted". Visit the site and add your zip code, to demonstrate this is a nation of tolerance.Labels: politics

The Voter's Self-Defense System is ready - Project Vote Smart is a long-term project I've been supporting for years, and today, they're finally running full-page ads announcing the project's completion. The resulting web site, run by summer intern volunteers, now provides non-partisan, up-to-date and verifiable information about candidates' positions on the issues, with links to their voting records and the text of their speeches... a great site to remember whenever you're getting conflicting or evasive messages about any of the 40,000 people running for state and national office. Check out today's ad, here.

Electoral Compass - Here's another one of those web sites that will analyze your position on key issues, and show you which Presidential Candidate comes closest with his or her philosophy. It also plots your responses on a social and economic scale, to give you an idea where your beliefs place you. It was developed by an independent company, and offers links to the candidates' position speeches and debates for the various issues. Quite interesting! [Thanks, Jay!]Labels: politics

Play the Candidate Match game - USA Today came out with this clever interactive Candidate match game, where you answer a small set of questions about today's hottest issues, and the application tells you which candidates match your views the closest. You can also see how your views jive with a national poll on the same questions, and you can adjust the weighting of the various questions to give more emphasis to those issues most important to you. Excellent design.Labels: politics

One of my pet peeves - I've always said that you can always tell when it's a slow news day if any of the top news stories are quoting opinion polls. After the laughable results of polls regarding the recent Presidential primaries, people are finally starting to question why so much attention is paid to them in the first place. How do we know people are even cooperating with the pollsters? I probably wouldn't, just to mess with their heads for having bothered me with their useless questions. Here's a story entitled "Of what use are opinion polls?" OK, I've already paid too much attention to polls just by blogging about them, so that's the end of that subject.Labels: currentEvents, politics

Quote du jour -President Bush says he's really going to buckle down now and fight global warming. As a matter of fact, he announced today that he's deploying 20,000 troops to the sun.--David LettermanLabels: currentEvents, haha, politics

A Unity Ticket - Unity08 is a group that intends to select and elect a "Unity Ticket" in the 2008 Presidential Race, using an online "virtual convention", and is seeking delegates from the roles of registered voters. In other words, they're as tired and disillusioned by the divisive politics-as-usual gridlock we've been getting from both political parties for so many years, and want to see both parties equally represented on the next ticket and in the next administration, or independents who pledge to assemble such a team.Labels: politics
